  The 1881 Census lists Isabella (John) Shand living at Old Smiddy Forgue She is wife (Head) Ag Labourers wife age 51 born Huntly Living there with her are three sons William age 14 Robert age 11 and James age 6 There is also a John Walker grandson age 2 A curious item is John Jaffery Shand listed as son age 7 months born Rayne This has to give rise to speculation as to whether the mother is in fact the 51 year old head of household as stated The register of births as supplied from the Scotlands people site gives a birth for John Jaffray Shand (Illegitimate) Aug 7th 1880 at 11 45 pm at Hatton Ardoyne The mother is Jane Jaffray domestic servant and the father is John Shand farm servant of address Cambeausey(?) Culsalmond This is probably the child listed on the 1881 Census and parked with his grand-parents at the old Smiddy Forgue prior to the couple getting married in Oyne in 1881 Contact with his descendants (March 2005) has produced his marriage certificate from the Parish of Fyvie He married Mary Shewan Scott age 22 domestic servant of Gourdas Fyvie 29 th Dec 1805 He is listed as John Shand farm servant age 25 bachelor also of Fyvie They had a farm at Rosehearty (near Fraserburgh) called Peathill where their daughter Jean used to go for holidays when she was little His death is recorded in the Northern District of Aberdeen 30th Nov 1952 and he is described as a domestic gardener married to Mary Scott The informant is his daughter Jean Clark of 39 Roslin Street Aberdeen
