  I started with very little information on Alexander except that he attended the registrars office to register the birth of daughter Anne alongside the mother Ann Jaffrey in Jan 1869 He gives his occupation as farm servant The couple subsequently married in Oyne on the 24th of May 1869 A search for them on the 1881 Census locates them at 33 Morrison St. Edinburgh as follows--- Alexander Coutts Police Constable married age 41 born Oyne Wife Annie age 32 born Oyne and daughter Anne age 12 scholar also born Oyne Also present is their second daughter Alexanderina age 7 born Edinburgh son William age 4 born Edinburgh and son Adam M Coutts age10 months also born Edinburgh (they have a lodger George Grieve soldier on furlough born Leith Edinburgh) My mothers information was that the family should comprise 3 girls and 2 boys so there is still one to come and I believe her name to be Elsie A search for her birth on "Scotlands people" gives 7th Oct 1886 at 60 Morrison Street Edinburgh father is William Coutts Police constable. Mother Ann Coutts ms Jaffrey Birth is in the district of St George Edinburgh 1886 page 556 1901 Census Eun3 page 6 Gooseknowes Oyne Alexander Coutts Head age 61 Crofter born Oyne and his wife Annie Jaffrey Coutts age 62 born Oyne also son Adam Coutts age 20 unmarried bookmaker Edinburgh (Enumerator error on Annies age should be 51) A headstone in Oyne cemetery says "In loving memory of my dear father and mother Alexander Coutts who died at Gooseknowes Oyne 23rd Sept 1905. Ann Jaffrey died at Leith 3rd Nov 1911 "Till the day breaks""
