  		Hatton of Ardoyne House This is the house at Hatton of Ardoyne near Oyne as described in the auction sale catalogue I somehow expected a property older in appearance and suspect that this must have been a replacement at some point As you head out of Oyne crossing the railway line towards Old Rayne you come to a junction with the main highway and at this point a small road immediately on the left winds it way back in the direction you came passing the Hatton properties to exit on the Oyne to Insch road close to the toll bridge

  Isabel Jaffrey was my grandmother At her baptism she was named Isabel but she was normally referred to as Isabella or Isa She had three children before she married Robert Alexander These three are listed in birth date order with her three later children (The father or fathers are not known) First born William was brought up by his grandparents at Ardoyne Initially Charles was boarded out and poor Frederick died at 9 months The 1891 Census shows her working as a domestic servant at Hill of Petty ,Fyvie she is unmarried age 29 born Oyne This is an eventful year for her. In Sept she marries Robert Alexander and in Nov she gives birth to daughter Elsie Skene Alexander Sometime after she married Robert Alexander he took over the tenancy of the family croft at North Sunside Wartle from his parents, and I believe son Charles Jaffrey was brought up in Wartle William remained with his grandparents The census returns of 1891 and 1901 make it clear that William McIntosh was living at Ardoyne with his grandfather in 1891 but in 1901 Robert Alexander and Isabella have not yet taken over the Wartle croft but are living together wtth their three legitimate children at a separate house in Wartle, Charles Jaffrey is not there having started work at 13 Robert Alexander at this time was working as a labourer Both William McIntosh and Charles Jaffray are located in the 1901 census working together at Mosstown of Kennethmont for farmer Alexander Benzie Robert and Isabella Alexander retired to Baldyquash when they vacated the croft at Wartle Later when my father Henry Gray suffered a stroke and we were without home and income they took us in without hesitation What may have been a temporary expedient turned into a permanent arrangement As I grew up Granny allowed me to help her in her flower garden ( more of hindrance than of help ) As she worked in the garden she sang to herself the old Scottish songs of her youth in a sweet small voice "Away in the wild woods the red deer are bounding, The lark in the sky sings a clear haunting lay, Afar in the valley the pibroch is sounding, That hame of my childhood, that dear hame o' mine" (That clear haunting lay, I hear it still)
